Fed: Official jobs indicators looking shaky

An official measure of future employment has fallen for the third month in a row, but
the government says it's too early to conclude that jobs growth is slowing.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations Leading Indicator of Employment
for February was 0.249 from 0.170 in January.

The department says the fall was led by downward trends since November 2003.

However, the department says it's too early to confirm that the latest decreases signal
a slowing from the solid cyclical employment growth expected in the first half of 2004.

Official unemployment figures for January will be released tomorrow by the Australian
Bureau of Statistics at 11.30 am (AEDT).

The jobless rate has been at a 13-year low of 5.6 per cent since October.
