NSW:Sydney surgeons cut short Christmas break
SYDNEY, Dec 9 AAP - Operating theatres at three of Sydney's biggest hospitals will
re-open a week earlier over the Christmas break, says NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner.
Royal Prince Alfred, Royal North Shore and Concord hospitals will now have reduced
surgical activity for four weeks instead of five.
Ms Skinner said the move would ease waiting list backlogs with surgeons at the three
hospitals expected to operate on up to 600 extra people.
She said the previous Labor government had blamed doctors for wanting to shut down
elective surgery over Christmas.
"But I've spoken to many surgeons across Sydney and they have been adamant that this
has not been the case," she told reporters in Sydney.
"A number have said they'd welcome time in operating theatres to clear backlogs of
elective surgery cases."
