NSW:Funky aesthetics meet functionality at Design Week

Cutting-edge examples of British industrial design today jostled for space with anunpretentious Australian mix-master at a Sydney celebration of design.

Great Expectations, a showcase of British works including a paper dress that foldsinside an airmail envelope, will open to the public at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum tomorrow.

The British works are being shown alongside an exhibition of iconic Australian itemsincluding a Ford car, the Sunbeam mix-master and the Dolphin torch.

The Powerhouse will also play host to a separate exhibition showcasing work by thefinalists in the national Young Designer of the Year Award, to be announced tonight.

The exhibitions coincide with Sydney Design Week, which runs from tomorrow until August17 with the aim of increasing public and professional awareness of design.

Great Expectations will run from August 7 until February 1, 2004.
